João Leiva Campos Filho, also known as Leivinha, passed away on Thursday. The Palmeiras legend was 76 years old and had been suffering from the consequences of Alzheimer's disease. The club and other personalities in the football world mourned his death on social media. Leivinha joined Palmeiras in 1971 and was one of the pillars of the Second Academy of Football, which captivated Brazil and won the national championship twice in 1972 and 1973. In total, he won six titles with the team. He is among the top five scorers in Palmeiras' history in the Brazilian Championship and is ranked 15th in the club's history. He played 267 games and scored 108 goals with the green and white jersey. Leivinha also played for Portuguesa, Atletico de Madrid, and ended his career at Sao Paulo. His career began at the base of Linense. In the Brazilian national team, Leivinha participated in the entire cycle and was called up for the 1974 World Cup, where he played three games. The midfielder also scored the 1000th goal in the history of the Brazilian national team. However, his career ended early: at 29 years old, due to physical problems. He was born in Novo Horizonte, in the interior of Sao Paulo, on September 11, 1949. Leivinha worked in the early 2000s as a commentator for sportv, participating in the extinct program Arena and in games, mainly in the Paulistão and Brazilian Championship.
